Personal Training vs. Group Training for Youth Athletes

At Parisi Speed School at The Training Hall, we believe group training is the optimal choice for most youth athletes, with personal training used sparingly for specific needs. While we offer personal training, we recommend limiting it to just a few sessions—typically 3 to 4 when starting our program, and then only as needed.

Why Limit Personal Training?

Group training offers several advantages that make it the preferred approach for young athletes:

1. More Fun with Friends

Group sessions allow young athletes to train alongside their peers, making the experience more enjoyable. Spending an hour with friends fosters camaraderie and keeps athletes engaged, unlike one-on-one sessions with an adult coach.

2. Healthy Competition

A touch of friendly competition in group classes serves as a powerful motivator. Youth athletes thrive when challenged by their peers, pushing them to work harder and stay committed to their training.

3. Convenience and Team Building

Group training provides practical benefits, such as the ability to carpool, saving time for families. Additionally, group settings create opportunities for team-building experiences, like post-workout treats (think ice cream—or a healthier option if you prefer!).

When Is Personal Training Appropriate?

Personal training has its place, particularly in specific scenarios:

  • Program Introduction: For new athletes, a few personal sessions (3–4) help them learn the program’s vocabulary and master fundamental movements, ensuring a strong foundation.
  • Specialized Instruction: If an athlete struggles with a specific technique or faces unique challenges, targeted personal training sessions can help them overcome plateaus and progress confidently.

Conclusion

While personal training can be a valuable tool for specific situations, group training is generally the best fit for youth athletes. It’s fun, motivating, and builds a sense of community, all while fostering athletic development. At Parisi Speed School, we encourage athletes to start with a few personal sessions if needed, then transition to group classes for a more dynamic and engaging experience.
